The movie revolves around the story of Vijaykamal (Sanjeev Kumar), a rich young man who loses his sanity after witnessing his lover's suicide. His father Thakur Suraj Singh (Ramesh Deo) hires a courtesan Chand (Mumtaz) to pretend to be his wife and help him recover. However, Chand faces hostility from Vijay's mother (Durga Khote) and elder brother Kishore (Shatrughan Sinha). She also becomes the object of desire for Vijay's neighbor Bihari (Jagdeep), who tries to lure Vijay's sister Radha (Shabnam) with false promises of making her an actress. Chand gradually wins Vijay's trust and affection, but also gets pregnant with his child due to his sexual assault in a fit of madness. When Vijay regains his memory after a fight with Bihari, he fails to recognize Chand and rejects her. Chand is then humiliated by the family and thrown out of the house. Vijay's younger brother Mohan (Jeetendra), who loves Chand, stands up for her and reveals her sacrifices and virtues. He also discloses that Chand is actually from a noble family and was raised as a courtesan after being separated from her parents in a train accident. The family then realizes their mistake and accepts Chand as their daughter-in-law.
Khilona is a melodramatic movie that explores the themes of love, madness, social stigma and redemption. The movie features some memorable songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, such as \"Khilona Jaan Kar Tum To\", \"Sanam Tu Bewafa Ke Naam Se\" and \"Roz Roz Rozi\". The movie is also known for its stellar performances by Sanjeev Kumar and Mumtaz, who display a wide range of emotions and expressions. Khilona is a classic Bollywood drama that has stood the test of time and remains popular among the audiences.
Khilona received critical acclaim for its story, direction and performances. The film won two Filmfare Awards: Best Movie for L.V. Prasad and Best Actress for Mumtaz. Sanjeev Kumar was also nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Rajesh Khanna for Safar. The film was praised for its sensitive portrayal of mental illness and social stigma. The film also explored the themes of class, gender and identity through the characters of Chand and Vijay.
Khilona was a remake of the Telugu film Punarjanma (1963), which starred N.T. Rama Rao and Jamuna. The Hindi version was also remade in Tamil as Engirundho Vandhaal (1970) with Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalithaa, and in Malayalam as Amrithavaahini (1976) with Prem Nazir and Sheela. The film was also an inspiration for the 1997 Hindi film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, which starred Bobby Deol and Aishwarya Rai.
Khilona is considered to be one of the finest films of Mumtaz's career. She played a complex role of a courtesan who sacrifices her dignity and happiness for the sake of a mad man. She displayed a range of emotions and expressions, from innocence to seduction, from pain to joy, from anger to compassion. She also looked stunning in her costumes and dances. Mumtaz's chemistry with Sanjeev Kumar was also appreciated by the viewers. Sanjeev Kumar also gave a memorable performance as the tormented Vijay, who oscillates between sanity and insanity. He convincingly portrayed the different shades of his character, from a romantic lover to a violent rapist, from a childlike innocent to a mature adult. 248dff8e21
